The American Soybean
Association (ASA) Legislative Forum began in 2006 as a way
to educate emerging leaders who are interested in how U.S.
public policy is developed and training on effectively
communicating with their elected leaders.
The Legislative Forum is a
two-day program, in conjunction with the ASA July Board
Meeting, in Washington, D.C. Interested growers participate,
along with the ASA Board of Directors, in learning sessions
on the latest public policy topics that impact the soybean
producers such as: implementation of the Farm Bill,
international trade agreements, biodiesel tax incentive, and
international biotechnology standards. Keynote speakers
include Representatives and Senators who represent key
committees of these issues or are soybean champions of these
issues.
Growers and state delegates
spend the next day meeting with elected leaders on Capitol
Hill to discuss policy issues affecting soybean producers.
After the Capitol Hill meetings, growers, state delegates
and Congressional leaders are invited to attend the Annual
Congressional Reception held on Capitol Hill to promote
ASA’s policy objectives and continue building
relationships with elected leaders and staff.
ASA works with its state
affiliates to identify emerging leaders who may want to
participate in this program. The Legislative Forum’s major
sponsor is Monsanto. The National Oilseed Producers
Association sponsors the Annual Congressional Reception held
on Capitol Hill.
The 2011 Capitol Hill
Legislative Forum will be July 12-13, at Washington Court
Hotel, Washington, D.C.
