A Cohesive Soybean Industry is the Formula 
for Success in Washington, D.C.

Members of the ASA AgriBusiness Council will develop an industry wide policy agenda that ASA and the soybean industry will work to pursue in Washington, D.C.

The United States soybean industry is more productive when we are “on the same page.” This is especially true in Washington, D.C., where a multitude of interests compete for Congress’ attention.

Consider biodiesel, one of the American Soybean Association’s (ASA) greatest success stories in recent years. Despite long odds, ASA, with industry support, was able to convince Congress to enact an historic biodiesel tax incentive, and then extend it.

A unified soybean industry made biodiesel legislation a priority and committed resources to the cause. Working together, we achieved success.

The biodiesel model that ASA built is a testament to what can be done when the soybean industry works together. Imagine what can be accomplished when this same model is applied to other priorities like the farm bill, trade, transportation, conservation and research.

A cohesive soybean industry will lead to policy success on many fronts. ASA, with its new AgriBusiness Council, is positioned to lead the way.

At ASA developing strong leaders and strengthening state relations is a top priority and the return of the ASA State President Summit is key to making that happen. Thanks to Bunge North America, Inc. the ASA State President Summit is returning after not being offered for several years. The Summit will provide all 25 State Presidents to meet with the ASA Executive Committee to develop a closer working relationship and build an atmosphere of trust, understanding and common knowledge that will strengthen both the state and national organizations.

The ASA State President Summit will take place on January 3rd in St. Charles, Missouri at the Embassy Suites Hotel. All State Presidents are then invited to attend Soybean Leadership College on January 4th & 5th at the same location.

Council Purpose and Structure
The American Soybean Association’s AgriBusiness Council will enable participants to provide direct input to the policymaking process of the Association.
The Council will be made up of organizations that fully recognize the importance of a strong soybean policy organization to the entire industry and are willing to invest in its long-term success. In return for this investment, the newly formed AgriBusiness Council will help inform, monitor and implement ASA policy priorities.
Membership and Meetings

 

  • The AgriBusiness Council will be comprised of the ASA Executive Committee, ASA’s immediate past-Chair and representatives of dues-paying organizations.

  • Two co-chairs will lead the Council. One will be the past-Chair of ASA and the other will be elected from among the industry representatives of the Council.

  • The annual meeting of the ASA AgriBusiness Council will take place each January, most likely in Washington, D.C. This is when the Council will develop policy priorities for the year. These priorities will be submitted to ASA as part of the annual policy process.

  • Council members will also be encouraged to attend and participate in the three regularly scheduled ASA Board meetings each year, where they’ll have the option of participating in either the Public Affairs Committee or the Trade Policy and International Affairs Committee. Council members will also be eligible for appointment to special task forces (e.g. ASA Farm Bill Task Force or Competitiveness Task Force).

Firms deriving between $25 and $75 million in revenue from soybeans:
$10,000

Firms deriving less than $25 million in revenue from soybeans:
